An Interview with San Diego Probate Attorney Steve Bliss

Taking Inventory of Assets: A Foundational Step in Estate Planning

Good evening San Diego and welcome back. I’m here tonight speaking with probate attorney Steve Bliss about the often-overlooked but essential process of estate planning. Steve, thank you for joining us.

Steve Bliss: It’s my pleasure to be here. Estate planning is crucial for everyone, regardless of age or wealth.

The Importance of Taking Inventory

Steve, could you explain why taking inventory of assets is such a critical first step in estate planning?

Steve Bliss: Absolutely. Think of it as laying the groundwork for your entire plan. You can’t effectively distribute your assets or designate beneficiaries without a clear understanding of what you own. Consequently, this initial step provides a roadmap for the rest of the process. Ordinarily, people underestimate the sheer number and variety of assets they possess.

Steve continues: “For example, beyond tangible items like real estate and vehicles, consider intangible assets like retirement accounts, intellectual property, or even digital assets like cryptocurrencies. It’s easy to overlook these when compiling a list.”

Challenges and Considerations

I can see how that initial inventory could be quite extensive. Have you encountered any issues with clients accurately assessing their assets during this stage?

Steve Bliss: It happens more often than you might think. Moreover, emotions can sometimes cloud judgment, particularly when dealing with sentimental items. I recall one case where a client struggled to assign a monetary value to a collection of antique dolls passed down through generations. She felt an immense emotional connection to them, but ultimately, we needed a professional appraisal to determine their fair market value for estate planning purposes.

Studies by the National Endowment for Financial Education show that nearly two-thirds of Americans don’t have a will. This highlights the importance of having a clear understanding of one’s assets before embarking on the estate planning journey.

Finding Solutions and Building Trust

How do you help clients overcome these challenges?

Steve Bliss: Open communication is key. I encourage my clients to share their concerns and hesitations openly. We often work with appraisers, financial advisors, and other professionals to ensure a comprehensive and accurate assessment of assets.

“One client, a retired entrepreneur, was initially overwhelmed by the prospect of listing all his business interests. Nevertheless, by breaking down the process into manageable steps and providing him with the necessary resources, we were able to compile a thorough inventory that ultimately gave him peace of mind.”
